DOW INTRODUCES 5 GALLON PAILS of DOWFROSTTM HD FLUID Midland, MI - January 29, 2007Dow’s specialty chemicals business introduced a new size in its DOWFROSTTM product line today at the International Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Expo in Dallas, Texas. A premixed solution of DOWFROSTTM HD inhibited propylene glycol is now offered in convenient five-gallon pails, called DOWFROST HD 60 fluid, in addition to the 55-gallon drums and bulk loads of concentrated product that are currently offered. The product’s primary purpose is for use in radiant heat flooring systems, while also suitable for a variety of other applications. It provides a distinct advantage over the traditional use of water in such systems. Not only does its low freezing point (-60oF) reduce the risk of frozen pipes, its chemistry inhibits corrosion from water and bacteria and clogged pipes. This convenient, new five gallon container will enable more efficient handling of product for smaller applications. Increased use of propylene glycol in radiant floor heating systems has created the need for these smaller-sized pails. The radiant flooring industry cites a recent jump of 40% of tubing sold between 2003 and 2005. During the same two year period, the nominal square footage heated with these systems more than tripled. These systems utilize tubes filled with hot flowing fluid underneath flooring surfaces and provide an alternative means to heat homes. "We've employed decades of Dow's research and development capability around heat transfer properties and corrosion protection to develop DOWFROST HD 60 as a reliable heat transfer medium for radiant heating systems,” commented Pete Pendergast, senior marketing manager for UCONTM Fluids & Lubricants as well as Low Temp Thermal Fluids. “The result is an enabling peace of mind for contractors and homeowners who choose our fluid." DOWFROST HD 60 is an inhibited propylene glycol that provides superior freeze and corrosion protection in residential and small industrial hydronic/radiant floor heating systems, snow/ice melt systems, and geothermal systems. It is recommended for use in any HVAC application needing a low toxicity, effective heat transfer fluid. Enhanced protection for copper components makes DOWFROST HD 60 the preferred propylene glycol-based fluid for HVAC applications. When properly installed, this product is capable of providing 10 to 20 years of freeze and corrosion protection. Used correctly, a radiant floor heating system reduces overall heat loss and since heat radiates from the base of the room it helps maintain optimal comfort level for the home’s inhabitants. Radiant heat flooring systems being more energy efficient are particularly attractive with current high prices for oil and natural gas.
